A WORLD IN A SUITCASE

My Paddington

We were commissioned directly by Open Age to bring personal stories about Paddington landmarks to life, as part of Paddington Arts Project, called My Paddington.
Learners produced  their art and wrote their stories on an iPad.
There was an exhibition of the work produced.

Shiv's story: Whiteley's partner:
I worked in Whiteley's from 1971 to 1972. Whiteley's was first departmental store in London. It was also shown in the film My Fair Lady. Whiteley's was the first one to have Bargain Centre. Now you go to Poundland or Pound World.I worked as assistant Manager. people loved it. You could buy anything at low price. It was closed for 10yrs and it opened again with only the front structure the same. All the rest was built new. Whiteley's was opened  in 1963 by William Whiteley. He was shot dead in Whiteley,s which is a listed building.

Gwen’s story:
123 Cleaners on Shirland Road.
For the last ten years I have used this shop when giving directions to my flat, as it is near the bus stop. I am also a customer there.
Brenda's story:  I have lived and worked all my life. ( 85 years ) within a one mile area of Maida Hill market , which has been by known by various names during the last 100 years,"

Sue's Review: Tim and Myrna made this a really enjoyable course with their expertise, enthusiasm and patience. The project was focused on the Paddington/Queens Park area. We each focused on an area familiar to ourselves using a map of the area, photographs and a drawing. By using various iPad functions we were able to produce a collage effect.
